Paradise Philippines is not only an archipelago rich in natural resources and nature’s wonders which are usually found in far flung provinces, but also of various giant shopping malls. In each of every major cities all through out paradise Philippines, one can always find a shopping mall lying on the heart of the city.
In Metro Manila alone, where paradise philippines’ capital city is located, the number of malls that have sprung up since the EDSA revolution have quadrupled in number. In the 70′s, Manila residents and Filipinos coming from nearby suburbs converged in the Cubao area, where the Araneta Center is located. The Araneta Center during that time is a shopping haven for Metro Manila residents. At Araneta Center you can find shopping malls such as Ali Mall, Farmer’s Plaza, Isetan, COD and ShoeMart. SM Cubao is one of the earliest prime holdings of the rich Sy family. Its success in Cubao paved the way for other SM Malls that were sporadically built in various cities of Metro Manila and to the nearby provinces.
In the nearby Makati City, there were also some notably significant shopping malls that were built and serve as the shoppin haven of the Southern Metro Manila people in paradise philippines. the Landmark of Makati is one of the first to be built by the Ayala family. The old Greenbelt mall is also the favorite hang out places of the upper class Filipinos in paradise Philippines.
The Manila area did not lag behind in terms of shopping centers. Carridedo, Divisoria and Sta Cruz were the favorites of the lower class Filipinos who wanted value for their hard earned money.
As the 90′s ushers in, the shopping center congglomerates shifted their focus in the booming Ortigas area. SM Prime Holdings, built one of its biggest and largest mall in the heart of Ortigas. SM Megamall became the most visited shopping mall by Filipinos.
SM Prime Holdings’ success in the shopping mall industry was not met with no competition. The Gokongwei family build their own shopping mall and branded it as Robinson’s. Thus started the ongoing battle between SM and Robinsons Mall which still exist up to now. As if these two malls are like brothers, Filipinos have witness the stiff competition when in almost all the locations where a SM mall is built, in a matter of months, the Gokongwei would build their own shopping mall.
Today, shopping malls were scatterd all over the Metropolis. Eastwood City in Libis, Quezon City is the newest kid in the shopping mall industry. Not wanting to be conquered by SM and Robinsons, the Eastwood City did not let the two companies build their own mall in the EastWood city area.
In the Makati area, the Fort is becoming the centerpiece of the Ayala Group of Companies. They have already built Ayala’s Metro Metro market catering to the C and D crowd. And for their A and B crowd, the Ayala company, created the newly built Serendra in High Bonifacio Street.
In the other parts of the Philippines, Robinson’s and SM have started their conquest as early as the mid-90′s. Where in the provinces have these two companies build their malls? That will be the subject of another post.
